The fact that there are bad people out there is not the point. The Pope pointed to an ideal of Life. Many folks who have abortions might not be able to take care of a baby and had no support and in some cases no possiblity of adoptions (crack babies eg), but this does not justify the abortion act to the pope. A mass murderer can be held in prison for life and in solitary if necessary for the protection of other inmates. Not every international issue needs to be settled by war. Pope would use Poland and the fall of the iron curtain as an example. He had a different view on going to war in iraq than some of us. I suspect that he might be a true pacifist having seen what happened in WW2. Mike
