This is a cool book. There is a chapter each on the apple, the potato, the tulip, and marijuana. The author describes the plant as it was found in nature, then follows the evolution of the plant as people tampered with it. Altering apples and potatoes seem to have had benefits, but he fears certain consequences with the potato. The author notes that prior to the war on drugs marijuana mostly grew outside and the stuff here in the US was of the sativa variety. Since the war on drugs growing has become much more sophisticated and gone indoors. Hotshot agronomists began blending the indica variety with the sativa and created the weed that is around today, a more refined and potent product than was around before 1980. Drug warriors should be careful what they wish for!
