Reagan had supplied smart weapons to the mujahadin(primarily the Stinger and TOW). That showed the Soviets their investment in tanks and helicopters was insufficient. That is part of what I meant by mentioning Reagan as a factor. Glasnost and Peristroika didn't grow out of idealism, it was very pragmatic. I agree with that. They where an attempt to save the communist system that wasn't working anymore. They winded up providing the opening to end the communist system without major violence or decades of extra stagnation.
