I just solved everything

Part of the reasons Americans live in a dream world is our irresponsible leadership. Greed and selfishness and a hard wiring not recognize certain problems are part of the human formula, and but is altruism and sacrifice for the common good.

We're not going to anything until the crisis already simmering under the floorboards bursts into a little flame. But by then it will be too late: after peak the USA might wind up short between 2% to 5% of its energy needs; or perhaps more (the decline worldwide is anticipated to be 2% to 5%; but demand will be up, and there's no reason to except the shortfall will be shared evenly).

And that's 2% to 5% PER YEAR -- and that's the problem. We won't be able to adjust to that sort of decline without a 30 year lead (the one Reagan squandered when he shut down Jimmy Carter's program).

But fear, if only speculative fear on which we can't pin a date yet, does not motivate by itself. Especially in this country where we have reason to believe all shortages are artificial. (In this case there is a lie too -- but it's the sufficiency is artificial).

So what's lacking is the other side of the equation -- not only what we lose, but what we gain by the new order we should be working to achieve. And we potentially gain A lOT: less polution, shorter commutes, more railroads (and Fast ones) and the kind of healthier communities that this country enjoyed when half of the population wasn't swilling Prozac just to get through the day.
