What I didn't understand until this Pope's death, it that many of the positions of the Catholic church such as women not being priests is not church law but rather church tradition.

2000 years of tradition is no tossed aside lightly. I'm not arguing that it shouldn't be (or that it should) just pointing out that its a major step. The church moves slowly on such things if it moves at all.

That means the leaders of the church are hanging onto some of these positions not because they might be morally wrong or right but rather because they like it the way it is.

Not being a matter of cannon law doesn't mean that the cardinals and the recent popes don't think it is not a moral issue. Of course its not like I hand around with them, or can really tell you what their exact motiviation is.

And they want their 'flock' to reflect their thinking and not the other way around.

At least on important issues that is the nature of an institution like the church. The "flock" is of course free to go elsewhere. They might not have been in 800 AD but they certainly have been for a long time now.

And the Church wonders why they are losing people in the more educated nations of the world.

In general more liberal churches have been losing people at a faster rate. Perhaps if the moderate and conservative churches are too conservative for some people they are more likely to not be active in any church then to find a liberal church.
