42 Grads by ruz I had heard this stat cited when Mark Prior went and got his diploma, but I didn’t believe it until I saw it in print: there are a total of 42 major league baseball players who have degrees from four-year colleges. The San Francisco Chronicle had an article on Sunday discussing why this was the case, and in John Shea’s opinion, it’s the current draft system that makes it so rare for a ballplayer to end up with a degree. I don’t know if that’s the reason, but the evidence is pretty compelling.
The list of players and degrees is an interesting one. The Brewers have the most college grads (5), while the Giants, Rockies, Mets, Twins, Tigers, Red Sox, and Orioles have none. The majors have their share of communications and general studies majors, a liberal sprinkling of business grads, and a handful of Ivy League graduates. Plus, one chemical engineer! Also interesting is that three of the handful of Japanese players in the majors have college degrees. |
