There's no reason that gas should be like 150% higher than it was in 1999. There were stations here in spring of 1999 that were charging 87 cents a gallon. I paid 2.30 yesterday. I drive a lot, and I'm going to end up spending close to 4K in gas this year, unless I get my act together and buy a hybrid (I went to look at the Accord yesterday; pretty nice, but they don't come with a sunroof [reduces drag]). Hey, at least I'd get a nav system, which is what I really want.
