How so? GM was previously the Microsoft of the 60s, number one market cap, GM goes way back and many, many people are now on its health care retirement plan. Toyota doesn't even come close. Additionally, my friend from Japan implied the govt picks up health care during retirement, not the corporations, though the later point I could be wrong.


Amy, even if you are right about health benefits, you are forgetting that Toyota guarantees full employment for its employees from when they are hired til when they retire. That policy has changed only somewhat in the last ten years but is still mostly true.

GM and Ford are dinosaurs when it comes to innovation. They still make tons of money because American rental companies mostly use them for their fleets and because their trucks sell well. But their design and loss of market share problems IMO have little to do with funding their health plan requirements.
