The People were hoodwinked by fear and smear campaigns.

1) How many phony terrorist alerts before the election?
2) How many lies and denials we now know were untrue?
3) The Smearvet campaign which was 99% hogwash and which they lied about being behind.
4) Trying to hijack God and the military as their own. Yes there are more rednecks in the volunteer military but Bushies really take Jesus's name in vain.
5) The big lie about the liberal media and the big attack on investigative powers of the media.
6) Covering up all kinds of serious crimes including the Plame affair, Halliburton, WMD lies, DElay's fundraising etc.

The reason the rightwing won is because they didn't play by any rules. They were willing to do and say anything, and I mean anything, and because they had a war to scare people with and shame critics with, then pulled it out. But already voters have major buyer's remorse. They know they were tricked again.
