There has been tremendous amount of work done on AI and heuristic programming over the last several years - as may be evidenced, oddly enough, in new products like the military's UGV's ( metalstorm.com ) and UAVs/UCAVs.
I'd find it a little hard to believe that some "..gimme.." cookbook on search engine development could hold a candle to Google, Jeeve's, etc., that have AI and heuristic component buried in them, developed by the type of people who work at MKTE, Microsoft, MIT, CalTech, JPL, or the DARPA military labs, etc.
