Wow. I think you have a Hollywood idea of what programmers do. My programmers work 12 hour days, alot of time on weekends, carry pagers and cellphones so we can reach them at any time of the night the mission critical applications go down, we always seem to be on a death march to hit some executive mandated deadline, and the engineers mostly have M.S. degrees in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.

When I have to page them for an application that's gone down, it is can be costing a company tens of thousands of dollars an hour while the system is down. I know my programmers earn their money and I suspect most other programming worlds are just as stressful.

I'd say they earn their keep, although I agree with you that $30-40 per hour is not slave wages by any stretch of the imagination. I think Lizzie's coming from the school of thought where they believe that programmers have a God given right to be immune to market dynamics. Technology and engineering is subject to all of the vagaries of capitalism, just as is every other industry...and we're seeing that now. Thus, the lower paying programming jobs.
