I think on the whole their lives are a lot better here than in their nations of origin.

A friend of mine hired a painter who does very good work but speaks badly accented English. One day he happened across the painter while the painter was with his son, a young man. The painter said "This is my son, Enrique."

My friend replied in badly accented Spanish "Hola, como estas?" to which the young man replied "Very well, how are you?" Turns out the kid is an engineering major at U of F.

There may be many things that painter doesn't understand, but he understands hard work and encouraging his kid to get an education.

They guy who put a new roof on my parents house after getting hit by two hurricanes had floated over from Cuba four months earlier on a boat he built. He happened to be a master carpenter and a roofer. Here only four months, and he's working sixteen hour days with a half dozen employees under him.
