Anyone read Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy? It's a great three-volume fantasy series. The plot is that God has gotten old and decrepit and isn't up to the job anymore. Metatron has pretty much been running the show in heaven (in a despotic manner), backed up on Earth by "The Authority," which is a thinly-disguised Vatican. Anyway a big budget movie is being made based on the first of the series, but they decided to secularize it on account of a movie for kids based on the concept that God needs to be overthrown might raise an uproar in the U.S. In the movie, "The Authority" is going to be your basic Stalinist type deal instead of the church.
