RE: "The discussion was about the 5 year performance since
the last AMAT stock split."

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Big Bucks attributes this to his belief that the sun revolves around the earth. Any attempt to convince Big Bucks of his error is met with "the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, I rest my case."

There is much to discuss about the "5 year performance", but the stock split and the number of shares is not at all relevant. Volatility depends on the dollar value of the float, not the number of shares. Liquidity and volatility are usually inversely proportional. Larger capitalizations are usually less volatile. Money moves markets. More money moves it more, but the key is the ratio of the size of the purchase in dollars to the size of the float in dollars.

Do you believe that 20 nickels is not the equivalent of 10 dimes? Would you be less inclined to give me a dollar bill for 20 nickels?
