Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES For the third straight year, International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) maintained the top spot in the application integration, middleware and portal software market for all of 2004, according to research firm Gartner Inc.
In a press release issued Tuesday, Gartner said IBM, Armonk, N.Y., had license revenue of $2.5 billion in 2004 for those three segments, up from $2.3 billion in 2003.
According to Gartner, Big Blue had market share of 37.2% in 2004. The No. 2 competitor, BEA Systems Inc. (BEAS) lodged application integration, middleware and portal software license revenue of $482.3 million, or 7.2% of the market.
While IBM's market share increased from 36.3% in 2003, BEA Systems saw a decline from 8.2% in 2003.
According to Gartner, 2004 marked the first time Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) moved into the top five ranking, with license revenue of $285.4 million or 4.3% market share. In 2003, Microsoft had license revenue of $175 million for those categories, or 2.8% market share.
Gartner said worldwide application integration, middleware and portal software license revenue came in at $6.7 billion in 2004, up 5.8% from $6.3 billion in 2003. |
