if one does a majority of their driving locally and achieves about double the mileage of a regular vehicle, it is well worth it.

Well, the reality is that none of these hybrids get anywhere near twice the mileage of a comparably sized gasoline version. Take the new Lexus RX330H that's soon to be released. The gas version is rated at 18 mi/gal while the hybrid is rated at around 28 mi/gal (varies considerably). If you drive 12000 mi/yr and assume $2.50 a gallon for gas, you save about $600 a year in gasoline cost.

Now, the premium to own the new RX330H is about $5350 (about 10% extra + tax). So that works out to about 9 years to break even at current gas prices.

I don't see a free lunch here.
