Many, The Marines are a special group of guys that are steeped in tradition. One thing that distinguished them in WW2, is that they were the first to use landing craft to go onshore on hostile islands, which was quite dangerous from defensive fire from hidden installations. Even from the beginning, they were special troops by being trained soldiers that would swing from their sailing ship, to one of the enemy, to do what they do best. "Sands of Iwo Jima" has always been one of my favorite movies about the Marines, but there have been many others that were very good.

I was also greatly impressed by the Rangers that were first formed in WW2, and they were the model for all of our
Special Forces today. The movie "Darby's Rangers" is great for describing their beginnings.
