Cary, as of right now there are 2.5B shares authorized and
1.68B outstanding... You will get plenty of notice of an
impending stock split and management confidence when AMAT
has a shareholder vote to increase the shares authorized.
If I recall correctly, in the past AMAT has asked to increase
the number of shares authorized about 2 years before
actually splitting the stock.
Making projections about how a company will fare multi-years
down the road is a waste of time IMO, because there are too
many unknown variables that will become part of the equation
at a later time. You are trying to deal with absolutes when
you should be considering the variables. As an example,
what happens if LRCX and NVLS merge and develop some new
technology and a patent portfolio that change the
technological landscape for how chips are fabricated?
Or what if China invades Taiwan. Chip equipment sales
would dry up overnight. One must plan but be willing to change the plan if conditions change. Nothing about the future is set in concrete.
Optimism is one thing, reality is another.
