It's easy to slide over the line historically when describing motives of political action. The French revolution's anti-clericalism is a good example of a non-communist activity that was lodged in the secular outlook that came from the enlightenment.

Populism is a good example in this country. The hatred of the farmers for the banks was a major 19th century theme that had nothing to do with Marx. It is still with us today, and gets mixed up with the left's outlook.
