Good news! Romania has now been voted into membership in the EU in 2007. This is significant for several reasons. One of these is that Romania will be obliged under EU rules to cease subsidizing its mining sector, which means that the unprofitable token mining in the Rosia Montana area keeping the region on economic life support will cease, and the local government will very much look forward to the opening of Gabriel's new and profitable mine as soon as possible. Gabriel is already following the environmental assessment process proscribed by EU regulations, so the EU entry does not change anything on this regard. cbc.ca
