A little more testing:

I have not been able to duplicate the 20% CPU use case.

However, if I access a PDF file from within Internet Explorer, the AcroRd32.exe program remains resident even if I completely shut down Internet Explorer.

Additionally, the more PDF files I access before shutting it down, the bigger the memory use of AcroRd32.exe.

Just exiting Internet Explorer does not close AcroRd32.exe. Ever. It must be killed by Task Manager or by opening a disk based PDF file, then exiting.
