There is a strong philosophical argument against the death tax but to me it is the same argument made against the income tax as well. The other argument is that its double taxation but so is the remaining 15% tax on dividends and there are probably other cases. If we are not going to overhaul and/or reform both the tax and SS/medicare system, my view is that we shouldnt abolish the death tax either. Oh yes, please raise the minimums however to my net worth + $1. But seriously i do buy into the belief (and again this assumes no overhaul of tax and SS), that above the exemption in the year prior to the one year abolition should become the benchmark exemption and be adjusted for inflation each year. Above that amount Death Tax should continue with proceeds going to SS as the dems want. Rates are another thing altogether and of course the usual blah blah about family business and farm exemptions.
