Information for Windows 95 Modem Users:

Go to mjs.u-net.com and download the
free utility called MTU-speed. Windows 95 uses default values that can slow down your internet connection. This utility allows you to reset the values to get between a 15 and 100% improvement in throughput (the average user who downloaded this and ran it told me they got about a 50% improvement in download speeds). Basically it changes the two Registry settings called MaxMTU and RWIN. The internet standard packet size is 576 bytes for MaxMTU. Windows 95 defaults to 1500, which is the value used for folks at work on LANs (if you connect from work, check with your network administrator first...assuming its okay for you to be online in the first place...). If you conect from home via a modem (not ISDN) your registry needs to be set to 576. This program has a simple selection that sets the RWIN with slider bars after you set the MaxMTU value. Basically, it sets the RWIN to 4 times the MTU value minus 40. So for MaxMTU = 576, it sets RWIN to 2144 (set the multiplier to 4). All settings can be returned to normal if you don't see any benefit with a "Remove All Settings' button in the utility.
