Raymond, I'm married to a Filipina and I lived in her country for years. Believe me, I am a history fanatic and while I was there I studied the US/Filipino relationship in great detail and for the most part we have lots for which we can be proud as Americans for our activities there. It is truly a fascinating story and one you have to go to the Philippines to study in detail, you just can't do it from here. We didn't kill any million Filipinos, either.

There was a big effort by Filipinos back during the colonial and commonwealth period to be admitted to the US as a state or short of that to just be allowed to remain a US commonwealth forever but the US congress told the Filipinos not just no but "hell no" repeatedly and dictated a timetable to full independence whether desired by the Filipinos or not. There is still a "US Statehood" party there. The Coconut Republic is a crazy place.
