Ferry services across the English channel were severely disrupted as French merchant sailors walked off the job to protest government plans to reform registry rules for shipping.

Ferries operated by SeaFrance were blocked in the French ports of Calais, while cross-Channel service on Brittany Ferries from Saint-Malo, Cherbourg and Ouistreham to Portsmouth was suspended for the day.

Seamen's unions called the strike as the Senate launched a debate about the proposal to reform maritime law.

The change would make it easier for ships to register under a French flag, but unions say it will in fact put French jobs in jeopardy.

About 1,000 merchant sailors travelled from northern France to demonstrate in the French capital, causing massive traffic jams in the Montparnasse area as they made their way to the Senate, located in the Luxembourg Gardens.
