A week later they got several new credit cards in the mail.

I doubt if it was a simple as it sounds. What they probably got was credit card applications. If they filled them out and tried to activate, it triggers a credit check. Then, "bye, bye" to the CC.

It's not the liquor store's fault if you are a drunk and they sell you a bottle. Same with using credit you can't handle.
