John,

The interesting component of the liberal push for universal health care is that they would be creating something they have fought for years - an HMO. Thats basically what government health care is - a large HMO, but instead of being for-profit or non-profit it is run by the Government.

So do you trust the Government to police itself? I don't, that why I like a mixed privately run, government regulated environment.

On the technology front - we are expensive because we spend a LOT of money on patients that are managed out of the systems in Europe or Canada. For example we do not let premies die without a fight - lots of other systems do - they perform financial triage on patients. And guess what - non viable premies are NOT counted as infant mortalities in most other systems - they are here.

My wife is another great example - when her recurrance happened in 2000 we had few options. The one we chose was a very expensive drug for chemotherapy at Duke. This ultimately failed - but it bought her the time to see our oldest graduate and reach the new treatment that has apparently killed off her tumor. Why is this a good example? The drug was not available in Canada or where it was made in England.

They do dispense it today - after the US provided the funding for the clinical trials and early field tests. Like the oft-hated HMO's most public systems do not cover 'experimental' medicine. Without the US, just where will that get done?

Please understand that I do not like the paperwork heavy, complicated and expensive system here in America - its just that I have seen and experienced the others.

A hybrid system like in Japan or Switzerland would be much more appealing that a British, French or Canadian model.

John

btw - her current Chemo drug is not available under any public health system.
