The reason we pay taxes SHOULD BE to provide the government with revenue. But shouldn't we try to do this in the most efficient way possible? Compare the amount collected in death taxes against the $billions in time and capital we spend in estate planning. I don't think you can make a convincing argument that this is an acceptable bargain. No there are other reasons at work here beyond simply raising revenue for government purposes.
