Yiwu, The first big wave of mainland Chinese imports into the US of which I am aware was machine tools and tooling. This stuff began to arrive here in the late 1970's and early 1980's, the first of it via Taiwan but manufactured on the mainland.

I was told at the time by importers that this stuff was being produced in facilities built by the Chinese communist government for domestic consumption but was now being exported.

Were these first Chinese manufacturing plants "sweat shops" like the ones being built more recently?
