If you ever watch "Kill Bill 2" (I noticed the effect moreso than in the first version), pay attention to how many film stocks Tarantino uses. It's kind of a clever joke in itself how he purposely cuts from one to another. You see "regular movie" thing for awhile, then cuts to some distinctly crap 70s stock, then more "regular movie" thing. Then some even weirder looking 60s stock. He must've shot using a half dozen different kinds, but each kind fits the specific story segment. People see film (still or motion) without really "seeing" what they're seeing, but some intangible thing gives you this vibe that adds a visual contextual clue, even if you aren't totally aware of what it is (the stock).
