My recommendation is to get started putting things down, either on a program like Family Tree Maker, or one similar....then go to the library if your County library pays for Ancestry (King County does)....then when you get some basic good info, like Census records from Ancestry and Heritage Quest, THEN think of getting the Ancestry program. But there are so many ways to gather info first....including reading old letters, and getting all the clues available from old family photos, if you have them.
