"If formerly bitter enemies like Germany and France, and Germany and Russia can finally make peace, why not China and Japan?"

Some people have long memories. Look at the U.S. relationship with Cuba. Forty-five years of embargo with a nation we never really warred against. If we can hold a grudge for forty-five years against a nation that has done us little harm, who is to blame the Chinese and Koreans for holding a grudge against Japan?

Or look at the middle east, where everyone is still feuding over a war that happened when I was five years old.

When the Hatfields and McCoys feud there is no telling when it will end, and there is never any profit in getting between them.
