Wow, Microsoft is REALLY getting behind AMD and it's becoming very clear why. 64-bit performance! With all the first to dual-core crap that we've been wading through these past few weeks this very important differentiator has slipped from the limelight.

Well that's all going to change in a week and a half. First it was Microsoft's Windows 64-bit applications lab and now the Windows Media lab, which emphasizes 64-bit processing. It's AMD all the way. This isn't Microsoft throwing AMD a bone or two, they're doing this because their future vs. Linux is at stake, they're late to the 64-bit party and they need to look damn good performance wise when they release on the 24th. Reading between the lines, AMD's Athlon 64 / Opteron architecture must run 64-bit Windows and applications so much better than Intel's EM64T that using anything but AMD to show-off their software technology would be performance suicide.

"The THX Best Practices Laboratory for Windows Media will provide tools and expertise for content producers to deliver the highest-quality experiences with Windows Media Technologies," said Kevin Unangst, director of Windows Digital Media at Microsoft Corp. "64-bit processing is a watershed technology for digital media and we're excited to have AMD take part in this cutting-edge facility."

I want to emphasize Microsoft's own words state that 64-bit processing is a watershed technology for digital media. Microsoft is excited about having AMD in this new facility and that makes me really excited.

Expect a lot more AMD excitement to come out of NAB this week!
