EP,

It gets worse every day. Now Chretien's buddy is testifying and it is just a joke. Never let Canadians try to tell you the US's political system is bad because Canada's has no checks and balances.

PM Martin is trying to stave off a non-confidence vote because the Liberal popularity rating is 30% and if an election were called today they'd most certainly lose to the Conservatives (40% popularity)

Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin's minority government may fall as early as next month

If a snap election were called over revelations emerging from the Gomery inquiry into alleged Liberal corruption, the Conservatives would squeak out a narrow victory.

However, but the Parti Quebecois is gaining support and if the Canadian gov't allows another separation vote it could be game over for Canada. Why? Because the US might support an independent Quebec move. This would create support in the West for independence and would bring Western Canada's energy into the realm of a possibly closer US relationship.

In the meantime, investors will be spooked by the election, which will probably be called in the fall, but as the Gomery inquiry continues and the scandal is reported the Loonie could drop to 75 cents I think.

Those Canroys might just get another haircut, and the worry about that is probably contributing to weakness in the sector right now. As the Gomery Commission conducts its inquiry if the Loonie drops it may do so the next few months.
