When I was in the service I saw and actually fired a 50 cal. in training but never actually saw any in the field except mounted on jeeps. Our favorite weapon of choice was (I believe the M-60 was the designation) M-60. It was a 7.62mm, air cooled, had several different ammunition belt arrangements but my favorite was a 50 round case that attached to the side of the piece and you could run with it. Being in the artillery, we had dozens of these weapons used in perimeter defense. jdn
