Israel Plans New Homes in West Bank (Once more Sharon makes a fool out of Bush)

53 minutes ago Middle East - AP

JERUSALEM - The Israeli government on Monday issued a tender seeking bids for construction of 50 new homes in a West Bank settlement, raising the risk of new tensions with the United States.

Yaakov Harel, spokesman for the Israel Lands Authority, said the homes would be built in Elkana, a settlement near the line between Israel and the West Bank. He said infrastructure work has been completed and construction of the homes could begin in two or three months.

The U.S.-backed "road map" peace plan calls for a halt in all settlement expansion, and President Bush last week criticized such construction during a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Sharon has said Israel intends to hold on to large settlement blocs in the West Bank under any final peace deal with the Palestinians. The United States has also said Israel will retain some settlements under a final deal.

The Palestinians oppose all settlements in the West Bank, which they claim as part of a future independent state. There was no immediate Palestinian reaction to Monday's announcement.

I thought Israel was to freezes all settlement activity under the “road map”.
