Adding AMD64 is no trivial task. Busses, registers, ALUs, everything has to be twice as wide. If the CPU wasn't designed for it, it may drop a bunch of speed grades. Witness the original Opteron that ran at 800 MHz. That was the one that Sanders gloated about needing only 5% more die size to do AMD64. Well, guess what, he was wrong.

I believe Prescott was originally designed for *some other* kind of 64-bit, so data paths were probably already there.

Better to start from scratch with AMD64 in mind. Presumably what
Conroe/Merom will be.
