There is a difference though. I believe the DC Opteron die will be more difficult to use it as a single core Opteron in the event that one core is defective.

I am guessing that it can be dealt with fuses. The one difference is that Smithfield has no shared components, while dual core Opteron does have shared components. A defect in a shared component would render the whole die useless.
