The good reason is that the "free market" just isn't working. Every tax rewards or penalizes, and and there is a huge social, economic and political good tied to reduced consumption. Why do we have the lowest taxes of any developed country on gasoline? Are we currently subsidizing consumption, compared with the rest of the world? John Galt is dead... may he rest in peace. John
