Unless you are a CPA even you have no idea how bad it is. A typical tax library in a decent CPA firm fills a room about 12x15 covered in book shelves. Even then, if you practice tax law specifically, you need a backup organization for research to do it right. The whole thing is prepostorous. And, to put the icing on the cake, if you are doing your own tax return, and call the IRS help line you have less then a 50% chance of EVEN THEM giving you the correct answer.
IMHO we need to chuck the whole thing and start over. My preference is a VAT tax, runner up is a flat tax. If we had a flat tax I would be for the first 20,000 tax free (that takes care of complaints about the poor, losing housing deduction etc etc). The next level 20,001-80,000 taxed at 10%(that takes care of the middle class complaint) and all above at 20% (that takes care of the soak the rich philosophy). jdn
