I never said anywhere that we have an optimized taxation level in the US today because I know that as little as do you.
As a matter of fact in the case of US gas taxation, we most likely prevail well below said point.
That in no way means, however, that other taxes are not higher than the optimal levels.
Many most likely are.
Besides ignorance several reasons could be blamed for that with "Social Engineering" definitely being one of them.

Reagan with the assistance of Laffer and other advisors were the first to understand that a level of optimum exists for taxation just like for the pricing of any goods on the market.

Next they applied that on the income tax levels of their time and came to the conclusion that they were way over any optimum.

Both of which events were quite remarkable per se.

Having understood that Reagan had the guts to impose his drastic tax cuts while being ridiculed by everyone and in particular so by Old Europe.
