Various laws determine when you are allowed to be declared dead (brain dead). I don't know of any place that would permit pronouncing on the sole basis of an EEG remaining flat for one hour. - Holly

Actually, you don't have to be declared dead to have stuff turned off or removed. The family just says, "Pull the tube".


I've hardly ever seen EEGs used to pronounce. More often, but still rare in my own experience, is when an EEG is done in the hopes of finding some new activity.As far as pronouncing the patient dead, it can be done by a nursing supervisor looking at an EKG. Saves the doc the trouble of coming to the hospital at 2 AM
