I think brain death begins at 4-5 minutes. That's why we do cardiac compression; get the blood back to the brain. (Which, physiologically, is mostly where it goes. Body shuts down flow to skin, gut, etc. Keep the brain and heart going; it's really a wonderful response. Physiology is actually pretty cool, and amazing).

4-5 minutes does have at least one exception. Hypothermic drowning victims,, especially kids, can go as much as 45 minutes. The cold slows down O2 consumption that much :-)
