Wharf Rat, I should have made myself more clear in my original post on the subject.

In Nevada, in the event of objections to organ donation by surviving family in the presence of previously existing, properly documented intent of of a potential organ donor, that documentation will be honored and the designated usable organs be slated for donation. I don't know if California has become so enlightened WRT potential organ donors' wishes.

The last hospital I worked at in Nevada adhered strictly to the 24-hour window, performing all the tests I mentioned. Additionally, when pronounced, the donor
was (at least on paper) discharged from the hospital and readmitted under his/her newly given donor name. In the last California hospital I worked at, things were somewhat looser but that was a very long time ago and protocols have probably changed. - Holly
