Besides "the market for such devices is still relatively small", the key is wafer throughput. When device size gets to 45 nanometers, the likely choices for lithography are DUV with immersion and EUV, so the market for direct write lithography will still be small.

Of course, the question of "threat to ASML" doesn't answer Brian's concern about who really makes the best lenses. I would not mind if Leica decided to compete for ASML's business in DUV and EUV lenses and mirrors.
