"to make democracy work, the opposition to ruling government should have plans that appear credible and viable to the populace, alternatives that look like they will work better ... "

On this we profoundly agree. Democrats and Liberals in the US have become the party of reaction. I keep saying that on Lindy Bills thread where i am taking some R&R. But conservatives now in a majority are now drinking the KoolAid. They think they have a mandate. They think that bush his adherence to the extreme Supply side position, his seeming wilsonian naivite on fp, and his evangelical stand on all social issues will somehow automatically keep the Republicans in power until one of the twins becomes the Pres.
And that will happen if dems dont give up being the party of the further past as they compete with the party of the more recent past. Progressive politics whether lib or con should come from the out of power party but i have a feeling we will have to have a 3rd party first in the US to at least shake things up even if it ultimately doesnt replace a major. That party will be more moderate than either of the current ones. Platform should be compromise on social issues, more real eco policy--less future deficits but pro growth and low enuff tax, and a fp that is both pro democracy and balance of power. US cant act alone everywhere and i dont want the US to become Israel to a hostile world as Israel was forced to become that in the Mideast--but lets leave that issue out. Please comment. I would love to be wrong about you. Will probably not be back until tomorrow. Mike
