Mouse troubles

I have had this problems with several windows machines.

Right now, it is a WindowsXP Dell laptop

The mouse seems to "bounce" or "miss clicks" on many applications. Sometimes I have to click several times and sometimes one click does more than I want.

It "feels" like a memory problem in the old days when I was running too much.

I have done the obvious like check for spyware, run antivirus, defraged the HD, cleaned out the files with a file cleaner.

My machine as a whole seems to run a bit slow... as if the virus checker was doing too much work.. but I have Norton AV and have it set to only check downloads... I hope!

Even changing windows SOMETIMES takes two clicks to move the mouse indicator... and all I had open was task manager to check that nothing was taking CPU and this window to post.

Ideas? Not being sure if it is one or two mouse clicks gets to be a real pain.

Thanks
