If anyone is to blame for the smear vets being effective...it's Kerry. Instead of showing some gumption and going head to head right off the bat with the SVets...he stayed quiet for a couple of weeks. That was the death knell right there. When it goes dirty, you have to start slinging it back. Kerry should have been ready for the attack before it happened, refuted it directly and immediately while slinging some dirt of his own.
