Here is the projected trend for the world sugar market in 2005 (from a Chinese article)

Consumption, especially in Asia, keeps increasing. The world sugar production increased from 115 million tons in 1994 to 143 million tons in 2004, an annual rate of 2%; Bet. 2004 and 2005, the production will keep increasing, but the sugar consumption in Asia will surpass its sugar production by 7 million tons. The estimated demand in 2005 will outstrip the supply by about 2.8 million tons in the world.

The sugar production will decrease by >4 million tons due to the drought in India, Thailand and Australia. But the increasing production from Brazil will make them up. . Tsunami will also have some negative effect on sugar production in India and other South Asian countries.

It is estimated by the international sugar organization the world will see 2.2% increase in sugar consumption in 2005, and the price will increase US$0.10-0.12 per pound. So sugar production nations will have higher income.

Another factor will be the policy adjustment in terms of sugar industry in EU. No detail is known yet.
