You are overestimating Intel.

Intel introduced the 4004 (first microprocessor) at 740 KiloHertz (eight clock cycles per CPU cycle of 10.8 microseconds) in 1971.

The 8080 was introduced at 1 or 2 MHz in 1974,

When IBM started the PC thing, they used an 8088 running at a blazing 4.88 MHz, in 1981.
